Our Lady’s College Takes Croker

Last week, all of the Greenhills Junior Cycle History students, travelled to Croke Park on a field trip as part of their study of the GAA and the role of cultural nationalism in nineteenth century Ireland.

The girls were shown a behind the scenes film of the lead-up to All-Ireland days in the stadium, before being brought on a guided tour of the stadium and dressing rooms with a look at the journey of the player as he or she warms up and makes their entrance onto the GAA’s ‘field of dreams on match day.

The focus of the trip was a visit to the Croke Park museum where the girls gained new insights into the ways in which the history of the GAA is interlinked with the birth and early years of the Irish State.

There was time for fun too. Some girls got the chance to show off their skill with sliotar and football while others seized the opportunity to raise a replica cup and imagine what it would be like to be part of an All-Ireland winning Louth team!
