London Calling….to Greenhills Girls
Recently, Senior History students and their teachers spent a busy and very enjoyable weekend in London, immersed in history ranging from the two world wars to the pre-historic!
Bright winter sunshine added to the enjoyment of a guided tour of London with highlights including Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament and an opportunity to take photos at Buckingham Palace.
Even an unearthly early morning start could not diminish the students’ enthusiasm for the past and they spent the first afternoon lost in the world of the British Museum which features over two million years of human history and culture. For some, the highlight exhibit was the Rosetta Stone, a tablet inscribed with a decree issued in the second century BC in Egypt which has enabled deciphering of hieroglyphics. Other students were mesmerised by the museum’s giant lamassu, winged bulls with human heads which are treasures from Nineveh and Nimrod in Northern Iraq, designed as protective deities flanking entrances to Assyria’s ancient temples.
A visit to the Imperial War Museum and the War Cabinet Rooms enabled revision of World War Two and a trip to the stunning Natural History Museum in Kensington was a fitting close to a history packed few days.
For lighter entertainment, Paddington and The Lion King did not disappoint, and from their base in Elephant and Castle, and demonstrating dexterity in navigating the Tube, the Greenhills girls enjoyed a wander around Covent Garden Christmas Market, a quick ‘look’ in the National Gallery and the V and A, and some even made it to Harrods and Hamleys to admire the Christmas lights and even more bears!!
Special thanks to Ms. Mc Gorry for all her planning on behalf of the group.
