The Guidance and Counselling Department aims to help students in the process of making decisions in personal and social, educational and careers areas. This is done through individual consultations, activities and guidance classes. Working together with the Guidance Counsellor is of benefit in coping with the diverse and ever changing values in the home, school and community.
In counselling the student sees the counsellor on an individual basis. Students are given appointment times in writing on an official school appointment slip. Students should give this appointment slip to their teacher before the appointment time. Students should not accept an appointment time that would clash with a test scheduled by a teacher.
The Guidance Counsellor provides a caring context for counselling young people in personal crisis. Guidance counsellors provide a confidential service to the students who visit them. However, students are informed at the beginning of each year of occasions when that confidentiality may need to be broken. This may be where the student gives permission, in case of danger to life or limb or where legal or ethical considerations require disclosure. Parents are also most welcome to make an appointment.
There are two Guidance Counsellors in Our Lady’s College: Caroline Connell and Noeleen Bogue.
