1st Years take Step Closer to Basketball Qualifiers
On Wednesday, the 1st Year Basketball team made the trip to Santa Sabina in Sutton alongside the 2nd Year Junior C team. The first years were first to the floor. In quarter one Katie McCabe scored all her sides points, giving her team a 6 – 2 lead. The second five players to take to the court in the second quarter, kept Santa Sabina scoreless, while scoring 8 points themselves. Benita Assoua was particularly effective under her own boards. Quarter three Our Lady’s blew the opposition out of the water, soring an amazing 14 points, again keeping the home side scoreless. There was no way back for Sutton, and the final score reflected that at 34 to 2. Katie McCabe was their top scorer with 12 points.

Ava Prendergast started the scoring for the home side with Greta McEvoy following up with a great steal and basket. Despite missing open lay-ups, which would be a concern in tighter matches, the team was 9 – 4 up at the first break. Santa Sabina bounced back in the 2nd quarter and took advantage of some stray passing to level the game, 12 points each at half time. Ruby Matthews had a great third quarter, scoring 5 of her teams 8 points in this quarter to tip the balance back in favour of the ‘College’. They added a further 10 points in the final quarter, Ellie Riggs scoring just on the buzzer to secure the victory, 30 – 20.
